This full-day workshop will introduce STEM teachers to several DNA activities that they can incorporate into their classrooms. Participants will explore genetic diversity in plants by comparing the DNA fingerprints of a variety of common herbs and vegetables. Teachers will learn several basic molecular biology techniques, including isolating DNA from plant tissue, amplifying DNA using polymerase chain reaction (PCR), setting up DNA restriction digestions, and separating DNA fragments based on size using gel electrophoresis.

Prior experience with nucleic acid chemistry or molecular biology techniques is not required, and teachers will receive the necessary instructions and handouts to perform this exercise in their classrooms. All of the equipment needed to perform this activity will be available for teachers to either “check out” or use at the MSU St. Andrews facility. NOTE: The PCR machine will be available for teachers to use at the St. Andrews facility only.

This workshop is recommended for STEM subject teachers who work with high school students. Workshops are free to area teachers and include lunch. The class size is limited to eight participants.
