This workshop will introduce STEM teachers to a hands-on DNA activity that they can incorporate into their classroom curriculum, as students determine the presence or absence of Genetically Modified (GM) DNA sequences in a variety of food samples. Using food samples from the grocery store, participants will learn to isolate DNA, and then use the techniques of PCR and gel electrophoresis to test for the presence of two common GMO-associated DNA sequences in food. In Part I of this two-day workshop, participants will isolate DNA from food samples, and amplify the DNA using PCR. In Part II of the workshop, participants will use gel electrophoresis to separate the amplified DNA by size, and capture an image of the DNA for analysis. Participants will be able to determine if they successfully extracted DNA from their food samples, and if their food samples contain Genetically Modified DNA.

This two part workshop will be conducted on Tuesday, March 10 and Tuesday March 12 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. This workshop is free for local area teachers and includes a light meal.
